She inspires empathy from it and uses fear like a beacon to find the people who need help. The ring shows her the fear of others, and instead of shrinking away, Jessica embraces it. Being a Yellow Lantern pushed Jessica to face her fears and conquer them, and soon she admits that her nightmares no longer scare her, and instead they comfort her. Her ability to help people was not hindered by fear but helped by fear because what better to motivate than a fear of something even greater than the threat at hand. Jessica’s fears and anxiety are her driving force, but wearing the Sinestro Corp’s ring finally showed her that. It didn’t have to be a bad thing but could become the motivation she and others needed. With Sinestro’s help, she realized that fear was just another tool she could use to push people to help themselves and others. In Green Lantern (2021) Annual #1 (by Ryan Cady, Sami Basri, Tom Derenick, and Rob Leigh), Cruz stumbled across a refugee ship in need and decided to finally use her ring to help people rather than just a ride home. At first reluctant, Jessica refused to use the Yellow Lantern’s ring as anything other than a ride home. Fear may have become her weakness, but it could also be used as her strength. So when the yellow ring went to her in Future State: Green Lantern (by Geoffrey Thorne, Tom Raney, and Michael Atiyeh), she was more than surprised at the outcome. His overwhelming anger often proves to be his undoing, but Gardner has showed time and again that he is a loyal friend and hero worthy of the Green Lantern’s light.
